Archeworks – Chicago, IL

October 2012-May 2013

Need: Develop cross disciplinary educational opportunities for design professionals and others.

Solution 1: Developed ‘Elemental Mud’ workshops – SOILunit and WATERunit

SOILunit explores the life within soils, and tracing soil formation in the landscape. Unlike traditional classes on landscape design, plant biology and urban growing, this class offers an integrated perspective of the biological, social, cultural and environmental factors that relate to soil and human ecology.

WATERunit focuses on water conservation and remediation, and explores Natural bodies of water, the water cycle and urban water systems including learning how to design and build a grey water system that responds to the site.

Solution 2: Developed and curated The Wastestreams Film Series- a 4 part, participatory film salon. Four evenings over four months of independent films and discussion based on films under the themes: Land, Water, Food and Garbage.

The site partners were:

Inspiration Kitchens – designed in-house and outdoor compost systems

ReBuilding Exchange – designed and built mobile greywater sink; designed rainwater harvest system for outdoor lumber rack

Ginkgo Gardens – designed and built large hugelkultur bed to absorb stormwater runoff; designed and built long running trellis from fruit tree prunings
